Revolution in Environmental Health Science:
Environmental Health Expert Speaks at CleanMed Europe

Dr. John Peterson Myers gives an inspirational lecture at CleanMed Europe on May 29.
Dr. Myers will talk about the revolution that is underway in the environmental health sciences. It has been discovered that some contaminants at background levels of exposure alter the behaviour of genes that have been linked by genetic studies to
human diseases and disabilities. This overturns the traditional "genes vs. environment" dichotomy, and points toward new concerns and new opportunities to protect human health. Dr. Myers is widely known as an accomplished and inspirational speaker, and we are very proud and happy to announce his participation at CleanMed Europe.

John Peterson Myers is co-author to the widely recognised book "Our Stolen Future" (1996), which he wrote along with Dr. Theo Colborn and Dianne Dumanoski. It brought worldwide attention to scientific discoveries about endocrine disruption and the fact that common contaminants can interfere with the natural signals controlling development of the foetus. With a foreword by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, it is now available in 14 languages. Dr. Myers now writes, edits and publishes a companion website for the book, www.OurStolenFuture.org, which tracks recent scientific and policy development that has followed the book's publication.

Pete Myers is also founder and CEO of Environmental Health Sciences, an organization engaged in advancing public understanding of environmental links to health. In addition, he is senior advisor to Commonweal and to the Jenifer Altman Foundation on environmental threats to children's health.

With a doctorate in the biological sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, Pete Myers has worked for various foundation dedicated to protection of the global environment. From 1990 through the end of 2001, Myers served as Director of the W. Alton Jones Foundation in Charlottesville, Virginia, guiding the foundation's philanthropic support of work to reduce the risks of nuclear war and to protect the global environment. Prior posts include Senior Vice President for Science at the National Audubon Society in New York and research scientist at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.

Dr. Myers has served on the boards of the Consultative Group for Biological Diversity (Chairman 1995-1997), a consortium of 40-plus foundations working to enhance the maintenance of biological systems and their contributions to human prosperity, and the National Audubon Society (1991-1995). In 1992 he was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to a 4-year term on the Virginia Pesticide Control Board. Currently he is on the board of the Public Education Center and board chair of the National Environmental Trust.

We are looking forward to his speech at CleanMed Europe!
