Ronald M. Davis, MD, a preventive medicine physician from East Lansing, Mich., became the 162nd president of the American Medical Association (AMA) in June 2007. Dr. Davis was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees (BOT) in June 2001 and re-elected in June 2005. He had previously served as the first resident physician member of the AMA-BOT (1984-1987).
Davis was a member (1993-1999) and chair (1997-1998) of the AMA Council on Science and Public Health. He represented the American College of Preventive Medicine in the AMA House of Delegates (HOD) from 1987 to 2001, and served as chair (1996-1997) of the AMA Specialty and Service Society, a consortium of about 100 national medical specialty societies represented in the AMA-HOD. He was the AMA Medical Student Section (MSS) delegate to the AMA-HOD (1980-1982) and AMA-MSS chair (1982-1983).
Born in Chicago, Dr. Davis received his BS degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and his MD degree and an MA degree in public policy studies from the University of Chicago. He completed the Epidemic Intelligence Service program (a two-year epidemiology training program) and the preventive medicine residency program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is board-certified in preventive medicine.
Following his training, Dr. Davis served as director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health (1987-1991). He then served as chief medical officer in the Michigan Department of Public Health (1991-1995), and since 1995 has been director of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the Henry Ford Health System (headquartered in Detroit).
Dr. Davis represented the AMA on the board of commissioners of the Joint Commission from 2002 to 2006. He chairs the Residency Advisory Committee for the preventive medicine residency program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where he is an adjunct professor of epidemiology.
Dr. Davis was a member (1999-2005) and chair (2003-2005) of the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC) of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He was the founding editor (1992-1998) of Tobacco Control, an international peer-reviewed journal published by the British Medical Association, and was North American editor of the British Medical Journal (1998-2001). Dr. Davis has received many honors, including the Surgeon General's Medallion, the American Public Health Association's Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award, the American College of Preventive Medicine's Distinguished Service Award, the World Health Organization's World No-Tobacco Day medal and award, the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco's John Slade Award, and the American Thoracic Society's Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Davis and his wife, Nadine, have three sons and reside in East Lansing, Mich.
